I’m compiling a larger article on my own car, but while I’m on the topic of steering wheels, has anyone experienced the fixed-centre steering wheel on the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso (2007-2013)?
If so, what did you think? Cool feature, terrible idea? It looks like they discontinued it on the new 2014+ model.

It seems like a good idea, must be off putting at first tho. so since mostly people don’t like change, and it could have been a slight barrier to entry, I get why it died. That said I like it. I think it would be neat to have one

Haven’t driven one myself, but I can sort of see where they were going with this. Fixed center bit means controls and airbag don’t move around constantly (basically the opposite of a Ferrari 458).

It also means the airbag can be designed in a much more efficient and effective way, as it doesn’t have to take the angle of the steering wheel into account. As such it’s a safety feature.

I was mainly taught how to drive in a regular C4, and even though it required a bit of mental recalibration getting into a car with a regular steering wheel (yeah, I know, for most people it would’ve been the other way around), I don’t really have a preference either way.
I did like the center mounted digital speedo a lot, albeit more for its legibility than for its position. To this day I check every car I drive for the possibility to get a digital readout.

I’ve driven a Citroen with one (either a C4 Picasso or a C5, whichever one had it) and I thought it was an interesting gimmick but no more than that. Citroen dropped it for weight reasons, somewhat surprisingly.

How very Citroën of them.
